News & events:
A new publication, “Factors that influence the amplitude of the bereitschaftspotential,” appears in the August 2026 volume of “Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews.” Mark’s co-authors, Antonio Ivano Triggiani, Amy Whitmarsh, Aaron Schurger, and Uri Maoz, included this note:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our co-author, Dr. Mark Hallett, during the revision of this manuscript. Dr. Hallett devoted decades to advancing our understanding of the Bereitschaftspotential and made foundational contributions to our understanding of this EEG component and to the field of human motor control more broadly. His contributions have been central to shaping the field, and this work reflects, in part, the legacy of his insights. He had reviewed and approved the manuscript prior to submission. We dedicate this paper to his memory."
Ivano added on LinkedIn: I would have run into your office, finding you smiling and ready for one of my silly jokes—but this time I would have simply said, “We did it! It was accepted!!!” And you, as always, would have smiled and simply replied, “Great. I think we did a good job.” I missed you as a boss when you retired; I miss you now as a friend. Ciao, Mark
From Dr. Stephen Grill: The quarterly Mark Hallett Baltimore-Washington Movement Disorders Dinner Conference was held on Monday, May 7, 2026. Our guest was Bastiann Bloem, MD, PHD from the Netherlands who gave a wonderful talk to us and spoke highly of his relationship with Mark. He shared a recent publication they had both been a part of. Several of us wore our "Mark" ties and we discussed that we will make it a tradition to do so at all of the conferences. His presence will be felt at these meetings! I share a photo of Mark at one of the conferences and this is now used in the official invitations to the meeting.
Mark’s work was featured in a recent episode of the NPR podcast Short Wave during an interview with Dr. David Perez about functional neurological disorder. Here is a quote pulled from the transcript:
“For a doctor, for a scientist to say, I see you, I hear you — and, yes, Mark Hallett put on the map this notion that maybe one of the neuroscience themes that goes awry in patients with functional tremor and functional movement disorder is an abnormality in one's sense of agency or action authorship.”
The Mark Hallett Award Presentation will be held at the 6th International Conference on Functional Neurological Disorder in Baltimore, MD on June 14, 2026
The 16th Swiss Movement Disorders Symposium: A Tribute to Mark Hallett (1943-2025) will be in Lucerne, Switzerland on August 27 and 28, 2026
Judy and Mark’s brother Bruce wrote “If We Only Had His Brain” to the famous tune from The Wizard of Oz for Mark’s 70th birthday.
There have been many tributes! We are trying to collect all of them here. Please contact Judy (jephallett@gmail.com) if there is anything you would like to add:
